As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out.

And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants are in Gath.And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish, to seek his servants; and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not adjure thee by Jehovah, and protest unto thee, saying, Know for certain, that on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The saying that I have heard is good.Why then hast thou not kept the oath of Jehovah, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thy heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore Jehovah shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head.But king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before Jehovah for ever.So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell upon him, so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah’s anointed?And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

And they shall pass through it, sore distressed and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and turn their faces upward:

Let them curse, but bless thou: When they arise, they shall be put to shame, But thy servant shall rejoice.

And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

Revile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.

Because he remembered not to show kindness, But persecuted the poor and needy man, And the broken in heart, to slay them.Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him; And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment, And it came into his inward parts like water, And like oil into his bones.Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself, And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; And they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.

Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.
