When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba, the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him. He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine.

David went just beyond the top of the Mount of Olives. Ziba was waiting there to meet him. He was Mephibosheth’s manager. He had several donkeys with saddles on them. They were carrying 200 loaves of bread and 100 raisin cakes. They were also carrying 100 fig cakes and a bottle of wine. The bottle was made out of animal skin.

When David had passed a little beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, bearing two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred bunches of raisins, a hundred of summer fruits, and a skin of wine.

And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.And he bowed himself, and said, What[ is] thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I[ am]?Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master’s son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house.Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in[ the fruits], that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth,[ said the king], he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons.And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name[ was] Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba[ were] servants unto Mephibosheth.So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king’s table; and was lame on both his feet.

The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put[ them] in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.

Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage:[ there is] no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.

And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched[ corn], and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of[ their] thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched[ corn], and beans, and lentiles, and parched[ pulse],And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that[ were] with him, to eat: for they said, The people[ is] hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

And Jesse took an ass[ laden] with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent[ them] by David his son unto Saul.

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

Moreover they that were nigh them,[ even] unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen,[ and] meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for[ there was] joy in Israel.

Now Barzillai was a very aged man,[ even] fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he[ was] a very great man.
