After Absalom had lived in Jerusalem for four years, he went and spoke to the king. He said,“ Let me go to Hebron. I want to keep a promise I made to the Lord.

And at the end of four years Absalom said to the king,“ Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron.

After four years, Absalom said to the king,“ Let me go to Hebron to offer a sacrifice to the Lord and fulfill a vow I made to him.

Absalom went to the king and said,“ Your servant has had shearers come. Will the king and his attendants please join me?”“ No, my son,” the king replied.“ All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.” Although Absalom urged him, he still refused to go but gave him his blessing.Then Absalom said,“ If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.” The king asked him,“ Why should he go with you?”But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons.

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

The Lord said to Samuel,“ How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”But Samuel said,“ How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said,“ Take a heifer with you and say,‘ I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years.

He sent them to Bethlehem and said,“ Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

“ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable— how much more so when brought with evil intent!
