At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king,“ Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord.

押沙龍來見王，說：「看哪，現在有人為僕人剪羊毛，請王和王的臣僕們與僕人同去。」王對押沙龍說：「不，我兒，我們不必所有人都去，以免成為你的負擔。」押沙龍再三地求王，但王不肯去，只是祝福了他。押沙龍就說：「王不去的話，請讓我哥哥暗嫩與我們一起去。」王問他：「為什麼要他與你同去呢？」押沙龍再三地求王，王就讓暗嫩和所有的王子與他一起去了。

於是撒母耳拿起裝膏油的犄角，在他兄弟們當中膏抹了他。從那天以後，耶和華的靈就大大臨到大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。

耶和華對撒母耳說：「你為掃羅悲慟要到什麼時候呢？我已經厭棄他作以色列的王。你把犄角裝滿膏油，去吧，我要派遣你到伯利恆人耶西那裡，因為我在他的兒子中選定了一個王。」撒母耳說：「我怎麼能去呢？掃羅聽到了，就會殺我。」耶和華說：「你可以手裡牽一頭小母牛去，就說：『我是來向耶和華獻祭的。』

押沙龍逃到基述，在那裡三年。

然後打發他們前往伯利恆，說：「你們去仔細查問有關那孩子的事，一旦查出來了就向我報告，好讓我也去拜他。」

「經文士和法利賽人哪，你們這些偽善的人有禍了！因為你們在人的面前封閉了天國。你們自己不進去，也不讓正要進的人進去。

惡人的祭物尚且可憎，更何況他獻祭時居心不良呢！
