Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father’s tomb.

For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; Then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; Then I could hide from him.But it was you, a man my equal, My companion and my acquaintance.We took sweet counsel together, And walked to the house of God in the throng.

So Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had purposed to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring disaster on Absalom.

So he brought him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

“ I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled,‘ He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

They proclaimed a fast, and seated Naboth with high honor among the people.

Vindicate me, O God, And plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!For You are the God of my strength; Why do You cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

Ahithophel was the king’s counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s companion.

They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

Lord, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me.Many are they who say of me,“ There is no help for him in God.” Selah

But to the wicked God says:“ What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth,Seeing you hate instruction And cast My words behind you?When you saw a thief, you consented with him, And have been a partaker with adulterers.You give your mouth to evil, And your tongue frames deceit.You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son.These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes.

Then Balaam said to Balak,“ Build seven altars for me here, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”

And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on every altar.

She wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and seat Naboth with high honor among the people;

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel,“ Give advice as to what we should do.”And Ahithophel said to Absalom,“ Go in to your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if one had inquired at the oracle of God. So was all the advice of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; How much more when he brings it with wicked intent!

Hear the word of the Lord, You rulers of Sodom; Give ear to the law of our God, You people of Gomorrah:“ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord.“ I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats.“ When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from your hand, To trample My courts?Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them.When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear.
