Even my friend in whom I trusted, one who ate my bread, has raised his heel against me.

When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He set his affairs in order and hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Now it is not an enemy who insults me— otherwise I could bear it; it is not a foe who rises up against me— otherwise I could hide from him.But it is you, a man who is my peer, my companion and good friend!We used to have close fellowship; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.

Since the Lord had decreed that Ahithophel’s good advice be undermined in order to bring about Absalom’s ruin, Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than Ahithophel’s advice.”

So Balak took him to Lookout Field on top of Pisgah, built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats My bread has raised his heel against Me.

They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the people.

Vindicate me, God, and defend my cause against an ungodly nation; rescue me from the deceitful and unjust man.For You are the God of my refuge. Why have You rejected me? Why must I go about in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?

Ahithophel was the king’s counselor. Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.

They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and disqualified for any good work.

Lord, how my foes increase! There are many who attack me.Many say about me,“ There is no help for him in God.” Selah

But God says to the wicked:“ What right do you have to recite My statutes and to take My covenant on your lips?You hate instruction and turn your back on My words.When you see a thief, you make friends with him, and you associate with adulterers.You unleash your mouth for evil and harness your tongue for deceit.You sit, maligning your brother, slandering your mother’s son.You have done these things, and I kept silent; you thought I was just like you. But I will rebuke you and lay out the case before you.

Then Balaam said to Balak,“ Build me seven altars here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.”

So Balak did as Balaam said and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

In the letters, she wrote: Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people.

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel,“ Give me your advice. What should we do?”Ahithophel replied to Absalom,“ Sleep with your father’s concubines he left to take care of the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become repulsive to your father, everyone with you will be encouraged.”So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone asking about a word from God— such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel’s advice.

Do not rely on a friend; don’t trust in a close companion. Seal your mouth from the woman who lies in your arms.Surely a son considers his father a fool, a daughter opposes her mother, and a daughter-in-law is against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own household.

The sacrifice of a wicked person is detestable— how much more so when he brings it with ulterior motives!

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!“ What are all your sacrifices to Me?” asks the Lord.“ I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I have no desire for the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats.When you come to appear before Me, who requires this from you— this trampling of My courts?Stop bringing useless offerings. Your incense is detestable to Me. New Moons and Sabbaths, and the calling of solemn assemblies— I cannot stand iniquity with a festival.I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals. They have become a burden to Me; I am tired of putting up with them.When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.“ Wash yourselves. Cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil.
