When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.

I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled,‘ He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’

But to the wicked God says:“ What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.“ You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

And Balaam said to Balak,“ Build for me here seven altars, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.”

And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

And she wrote in the letters,“ Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people.

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel,“ Give your counsel. What shall we do?”Ahithophel said to Absalom,“ Go in to your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the house, and all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench to your father, and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof. And Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.

Put no trust in a neighbor; have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms;for the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how much more when he brings it with evil intent.

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom!
