王就起來，撕裂衣服，躺在地上。侍立在他身旁的所有臣僕，也都撕裂衣服。

他三天都不能看見甚麼，不吃也不喝。

亞哈聽見這些話，就撕裂自己的衣服，披上麻布，禁食，睡在麻布上，並且神色頹喪地行走。

到那日，主萬軍之耶和華叫人哭泣哀號，剃光頭髮，穿上麻布。

在患難的日子，你呼求我。我必搭救你，你也必尊敬我。”

他回答：“孩子還活著的時候，我禁食哭泣，因為我想：‘誰知道呢？也許耶和華憐憫我，讓孩子可以活著。’

“你要去，把書珊城所有的猶大人都召集起來，為我禁食三天，就是三日三夜不吃不喝；我和我的婢女也要這樣禁食。然後我就違例進去見王；我若是死，就死吧。”

耶和華啊！我們在急難中尋求你；你的懲罰臨到我們身上的時候，我們就傾心吐意低聲禱告。

我哭泣禁食，這竟成了我的羞辱。

或者神回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。’”

邪惡在他的口中雖然甘甜，他把邪惡藏在自己的舌下。他雖然愛惜不捨，含在口中，然而他的食物在他腹中卻要變壞，在他裡面成為眼鏡蛇的毒汁。

耶和華說：“現在雖然如此，你們仍要全心全意，以禁食、哭泣、哀號，歸向我。”你們要撕裂你們的心腸，不要撕裂你們的衣服。並要歸向耶和華你們的神，因為他有恩典有憐憫，不輕易發怒，並且有豐盛的慈愛，隨時轉意不降災禍。有誰知道或許他會轉意，並且施慈愛，留下餘福，就是留下獻給耶和華你們的神的素祭和奠祭。
