If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life, or you will weigh out 75 pounds of silver.’But while your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared.” The king of Israel said to him,“ That will be your sentence; you yourself have decided it.”He quickly removed the bandage from his eyes. The king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.

Because of his sinful greed I was angry, so I struck him; I was angry and hid; but he went on turning back to the desires of his heart.I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners,

He also said:“ A man had two sons.The younger of them said to his father,‘ Father, give me the share of the estate I have coming to me.’ So he distributed the assets to them.Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living.After he had spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he had nothing.Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.He longed to eat his fill from the carob pods the pigs were eating, but no one would give him any.When he came to his senses, he said,‘ How many of my father’s hired hands have more than enough food, and here I am dying of hunger!I’ll get up, go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.I’m no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired hands.’So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. When David got up in the morning, a revelation from the Lord had come to the prophet Gad, David’s seer:“ Go and say to David,‘ This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.’”So Gad went to David, told him the choices, and asked him,“ Do you want three years of famine to come on your land, to flee from your foes three months while they pursue you, or to have a plague in your land three days? Now, think it over and decide what answer I should take back to the One who sent me.”

“ What’s the matter?” the king asked her.“ To tell the truth, I am a widow; my husband died,” she said.“ Your servant had two sons. They were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant and said,‘ Hand over the one who killed his brother so we may put him to death for the life of the brother he murdered. We will destroy the heir!’ They would extinguish my one remaining ember by not preserving my husband’s name or posterity on earth.”The king told the woman,“ Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf.”Then the woman of Tekoa said to the king,“ My lord the king, may any blame be on me and my father’s house, and may the king and his throne be innocent.”“ Whoever speaks to you,” the king said,“ bring him to me. He will not trouble you again!”She replied,“ Please, may the king invoke the Lord your God, so that the avenger of blood will not increase the loss, and they will not eliminate my son!”“ As the Lord lives,” he vowed,“ not a hair of your son will fall to the ground.”

David told the messenger,“ Say this to Joab:‘ Don’t let this matter upset you because the sword devours all alike. Intensify your fight against the city and demolish it.’ Encourage him.”

A man of God came from Judah to Bethel by a revelation from the Lord while Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense.

We will certainly die and be like water poured out on the ground, which can’t be recovered. But God would not take away a life; He would devise plans so that the one banished from Him does not remain banished.

When it was reported to David,“ Uriah didn’t go home,” David questioned Uriah,“ Haven’t you just come from a journey? Why didn’t you go home?”Uriah answered David,“ The ark, Israel, and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camping in the open field. How can I enter my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live and by your life, I will not do this!”“ Stay here today also,” David said to Uriah,“ and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and David got him drunk. He went out in the evening to lie down on his cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.In the letter he wrote: Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest fighting, then withdraw from him so that he is struck down and dies.When Joab was besieging the city, he put Uriah in the place where he knew the best enemy soldiers were.Then the men of the city came out and attacked Joab, and some of the men from David’s soldiers fell in battle; Uriah the Hittite also died.

“ Listen to another parable: There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away.When the grape harvest drew near, he sent his slaves to the farmers to collect his fruit.But the farmers took his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first group, and they did the same to them.Finally, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance!’So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?”“ He will completely destroy those terrible men,” they told Him,“ and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at the harvest.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes?Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit.Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whoever it falls, it will grind him to powder!”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they knew He was speaking about them.

After a long time, the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year:“ Go and present yourself to Ahab. I will send rain on the surface of the land.”

Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.Against You— You alone— I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem.Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,“ Go and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them,‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’

When the king had settled into his palace and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,the king said to Nathan the prophet,“ Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.”So Nathan told the king,“ Go and do all that is on your heart, for the Lord is with you.”But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan:“ Go to My servant David and say,‘ This is what the Lord says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in?

I will sing about the one I love, a song about my loved one’s vineyard: The one I love had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.He broke up the soil, cleared it of stones, and planted it with the finest vines. He built a tower in the middle of it and even dug out a winepress there. He expected it to yield good grapes, but it yielded worthless grapes.So now, residents of Jerusalem and men of Judah, please judge between Me and My vineyard.What more could I have done for My vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briers will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that rain should not fall on it.For the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah, the plant He delighted in. He looked for justice but saw injustice, for righteousness, but heard cries of wretchedness.

When they told Jotham, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and called to them: Listen to me, lords of Shechem, and may God listen to you:The trees set out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree,“ Reign over us.”But the olive tree said to them,“ Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, and rule over the trees?”Then the trees said to the fig tree,“ Come and reign over us.”But the fig tree said to them,“ Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, and rule over trees?”Later, the trees said to the grapevine,“ Come and reign over us.”But the grapevine said to them,“ Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, and rule over trees?”Finally, all the trees said to the bramble,“ Come and reign over us.”The bramble said to the trees,“ If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David.

“ There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day.But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was left at his gate.He longed to be filled with what fell from the rich man’s table, but instead the dogs would come and lick his sores.One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side.‘ Father Abraham!’ he called out,‘ Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!’“‘ Son,’ Abraham said,‘ remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.’“‘ Father,’ he said,‘ then I beg you to send him to my father’s house—because I have five brothers— to warn them, so they won’t also come to this place of torment.’“ But Abraham said,‘ They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’“‘ No, father Abraham,’ he said.‘ But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’“ But he told him,‘ If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”
