And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.And he hasted, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.

For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.

And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, Of a truth I am a widow, and my husband is dead.And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.And, behold, the whole family is risen against thy handmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew, and so destroy the heir also. Thus will they quench my coal which is left, and will leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the face of the earth.And the king said unto the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.And the woman of Tekoa said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.And the king said, Whosoever saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Jehovah unto Beth- el: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to- day also, and to- morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Hear another parable: There was a man that was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive his fruits.And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them in like manner.But afterward he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.And they took him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do unto those husbandmen?They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvellous in our eyes?Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.And he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.For I know my transgressions; And my sin is ever before me.Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, And done that which is evil in thy sight; That thou mayest be justified when thou speakest, And be clear when thou judgest.Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts; And in the hidden part thou wilt make me to know wisdom.Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.Make me to hear joy and gladness, That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.Hide thy face from my sins, And blot out all mine iniquities.Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy Spirit from me.Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with a willing spirit.Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; And sinners shall be converted unto thee.Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation; And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.O Lord, open thou my lips; And my mouth shall show forth thy praise.For thou delightest not in sacrifice; else would I give it: Thou hast no pleasure in burnt- offering.The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.Then wilt thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, In burnt- offering and whole burnt- offering: Then will they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

But the angel of Jehovah said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it because there is no God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baal- zebub, the god of Ekron?

And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about,that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee.And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying,Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

Let me sing for my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved had a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:and he digged it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also hewed out a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; I will break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:and I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned nor hoed; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.For the vineyard of Jehovah of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but, behold, oppression; for righteousness, but, behold, a cry.

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive- tree, Reign thou over us.But the olive- tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?And the trees said to the fig- tree, Come thou, and reign over us.But the fig- tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house;for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.
