So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who were living with Naboth in his city.Now she had written in the letters, saying,“ Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people;and seat two worthless men opposite him, and have them testify against him, saying,‘ You cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
People of low standing are only breath, and people of rank are a lie; In the balances they go up. Together they are lighter than breath.
Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
Oh, that my head were waters And my eyes a fountain of tears, That I might weep day and night For those slain of the daughter of my people!Oh that I had in the desert A travelers’ lodging place; So that I might leave my people And go away from them! For all of them are adulterers, An assembly of treacherous people.“ They bend their tongues like their bows; Lies and not truth prevail in the land; For they proceed from evil to evil, And they do not know Me,” declares the Lord.“ Let everyone be on guard against his neighbor, And do not trust any brother; Because every brother utterly betrays, And every neighbor goes about as a slanderer.
As for evil, both hands do it well. The leader asks for a bribe, also the judge, And the great one speaks the capricious desire of his soul; So they plot it together.The best of them is like a thorn bush, The most upright like a thorn hedge. The day when you post your watchmen, Your punishment is coming. Then their confusion will occur.Do not trust in a neighbor; Do not have confidence in a close friend. Guard your lips From her who lies in your arms.
Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be innocent, And I will be blameless of great wrongdoing.
“ The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?
