非利士人攻打以色列。以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，很多人在基利波山被杀仆倒。非利士人紧追扫罗和他的儿子，杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达、麦基‧舒亚。攻击扫罗的战事激烈，弓箭手追上他，他被弓箭手射中，伤势很重。扫罗吩咐拿他兵器的人说：“你拔出刀来，把我刺死，免得那些未受割礼的人来刺我，凌辱我。”但拿兵器的人不肯，因为他非常惧怕。于是扫罗拿起刀来，伏在刀上。拿兵器的人见扫罗已死，也伏在刀上跟他一起死。

追赶我们的比空中的鹰更快；他们在山上追逼我们，在旷野埋伏，等候我们。

在那里有洗鲁雅的三个儿子：约押、亚比筛、亚撒黑。亚撒黑的脚快如野地里的羚羊；

我的日子如蒲草船掠过，如鹰俯冲抓食。

狮子—百兽中最勇猛的、无论遇见什么绝不退缩，

迦得人中有人到旷野的山寨投奔大卫，都是大能的勇士，能拿盾牌和枪的战士。他们的面貌好像狮子，敏捷如山上的鹿。

耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅是来自甲薛的勇士，曾行了大事。他杀了摩押人亚利伊勒的两个儿子，又在下雪的时候下到坑里去，杀了一只狮子。

约拿单对他说：“绝无此事！你必不至于死。看哪，我父做事，无论大小，没有不告诉我的。我父亲为什么要隐瞒我这件事呢？不会这样的！”

大卫对扫罗说完了话，约拿单的心与大卫的心深相契合。约拿单爱大卫，如同爱自己的性命。
