非利士人与以色列人交战，以色列人败逃，许多人在基利波山被杀。非利士人穷追扫罗及其众子，杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达和麦基舒亚。扫罗周围战事激烈，他被弓箭手发现、射成重伤，就对为他拿兵器的人说：“拔出你的刀来刺死我吧，免得那些未受割礼的人来刺杀和凌辱我。”但拿兵器的人非常害怕，不敢动手，扫罗就自己伏刀自尽了。侍从看见扫罗已死，也伏刀自尽了。

追赶我们的人比飞鹰更快，他们在山上追捕我们，在旷野伏击我们。

当时，洗鲁雅的三个儿子约押、亚比筛和亚撒黑都在场。亚撒黑跑得飞快如鹿，

我的岁月疾驰如快船，快如急降抓食的老鹰。

有些迦得支派的人到旷野的堡垒投奔大卫，他们作战英勇，善用盾和矛，貌似雄狮，快如山鹿。

甲薛人耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅是位勇士，做过非凡的事。他曾杀死摩押的两个勇猛战士，也曾在下雪天跳进坑中杀死一头狮子，

约拿单答道：“绝无此事，你不会死的！我父亲事无大小都会告诉我的，他不会瞒着我这件事，不会的。”

大卫与扫罗说完话后，又见了约拿单，二人一见如故，约拿单像爱自己一样爱大卫。
