You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, The shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

Now the Philistines attacked Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them. Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.

Look! They are preparing a great feast. They are spreading rugs for people to sit on. Everyone is eating and drinking. But quick! Grab your shields and prepare for battle. You are being attacked!

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul and said,“ I am doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler over Israel, his special possession.

I will make it a wild place where the vines are not pruned and the ground is not hoed, a place overgrown with briers and thorns. I will command the clouds to drop no rain on it.

Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this curse. Perhaps you will be able to offer grain and wine to the Lord your God as before.

For there is no grain or wine to offer at the Temple of the Lord. So the priests are in mourning. The ministers of the Lord are weeping.

Now the Philistines attacked Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them. Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.

The next day, when the Philistines went out to strip the dead, they found the bodies of Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa.

“ Let the day of my birth be erased, and the night I was conceived.Let that day be turned to darkness. Let it be lost even to God on high, and let no light shine on it.Let the darkness and utter gloom claim that day for its own. Let a black cloud overshadow it, and let the darkness terrify it.Let that night be blotted off the calendar, never again to be counted among the days of the year, never again to appear among the months.Let that night be childless. Let it have no joy.Let those who are experts at cursing— whose cursing could rouse Leviathan— curse that day.Let its morning stars remain dark. Let it hope for light, but in vain; may it never see the morning light.Curse that day for failing to shut my mother’s womb, for letting me be born to see all this trouble.

‘ Let the people of Meroz be cursed,’ said the angel of the Lord.‘ Let them be utterly cursed, because they did not come to help the Lord— to help the Lord against the mighty warriors.’

Yet I curse the day I was born! May no one celebrate the day of my birth.I curse the messenger who told my father,“ Good news— you have a son!”Let him be destroyed like the cities of old that the Lord overthrew without mercy. Terrify him all day long with battle shouts,

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When Assyria went down to the grave, I made the deep springs mourn. I stopped its rivers and dried up its abundant water. I clothed Lebanon in black and caused the trees of the field to wilt.
