O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fruitful fields producing offerings of grain. For there the shield of the mighty heroes was defiled; the shield of Saul will no longer be anointed with oil.

Mountains of Gilboa, let no dew or rain be on you, or fields of offerings, for there the shield of the mighty was defiled— the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.

O mountains of Gilboa, may there be no dew or rain on you, nor fields of grain offerings! For it was there that the shield of warriors was defiled; the shield of Saul lies neglected without oil.

You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, The shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

Prepare the table, Set a watchman in the tower, Eat and drink. Arise, you princes, Anoint the shield!

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said:“ Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?

I will lay it waste; It shall not be pruned or dug, But there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds That they rain no rain on it.”

Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him— A grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God?

The grain offering and the drink offering Have been cut off from the house of the Lord; The priests mourn, who minister to the Lord.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

“ May the day perish on which I was born, And the night in which it was said,‘ A male child is conceived.’May that day be darkness; May God above not seek it, Nor the light shine upon it.May darkness and the shadow of death claim it; May a cloud settle on it; May the blackness of the day terrify it.As for that night, may darkness seize it; May it not rejoice among the days of the year, May it not come into the number of the months.Oh, may that night be barren! May no joyful shout come into it!May those curse it who curse the day, Those who are ready to arouse Leviathan.May the stars of its morning be dark; May it look for light, but have none, And not see the dawning of the day;Because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, Nor hide sorrow from my eyes.

‘ Curse Meroz,’ said the angel of the Lord,‘ Curse its inhabitants bitterly, Because they did not come to the help of the Lord, To the help of the Lord against the mighty.’

Cursed be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!Let the man be cursed Who brought news to my father, saying,“ A male child has been born to you!” Making him very glad.And let that man be like the cities Which the Lord overthrew, and did not relent; Let him hear the cry in the morning And the shouting at noon,

“ Thus says the Lord GOD:‘ In the day when it went down to hell, I caused mourning. I covered the deep because of it. I restrained its rivers, and the great waters were held back. I caused Lebanon to mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted because of it.
