But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.

he sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people. Balak said to him,“ Look, a people has come out of Egypt; they cover the surface of the land and are living right across from me.Please come and put a curse on these people for me because they are more powerful than I am. I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that those you bless are blessed and those you curse are cursed.”The elders of Moab and Midian departed with fees for divination in hand. They came to Balaam and reported Balak’s words to him.

and said,“ You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery, you son of the devil and enemy of all that is right. Won’t you ever stop perverting the straight paths of the Lord?

They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are spots and blemishes, delighting in their deceptions while they feast with you.

My people, remember what King Balak of Moab proposed, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from the Acacia Grove to Gilgal so that you may acknowledge the LORD’s righteous acts.

This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the journey after you came out of Egypt, and because Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim was hired to curse you.Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam, but he turned the curse into a blessing for you because the LORD your God loves you.

Those who reject the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law pit themselves against them.

“ Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam’s advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the LORD in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the LORD’s community.

Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.

But Balaam responded to the servants of Balak,“ If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go against the command of the LORD my God to do anything small or great.Please stay here overnight as the others did, so that I may find out what else the LORD has to tell me.”God came to Balaam at night and said to him,“ Since these men have come to summon you, get up and go with them, but you must only do what I tell you.”When he got up in the morning, Balaam saddled his donkey and went with the officials of Moab.

When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing on the path with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the path and went into the field. So Balaam hit her to return her to the path.

Ephraim, why should I have anything more to do with idols? It is I who answer and watch over him. I am like a flourishing pine tree; your fruit comes from me.

“ As for me, I vow that I will not sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. I will teach you the good and right way.

He replied,“ I have not ruined Israel, but you and your father’s family have, because you have abandoned the LORD’s commands and followed the Baals.

Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she asked Balaam,“ What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”

But as for me, I will not show pity or spare them. I will bring their conduct down on their own heads.”

He replied,“ I have been very zealous for the LORD God of Armies, but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are looking for me to take my life.”
