When the lookout standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out,“ I see some troops coming.”“ Get a horseman,” Joram ordered.“ Send him to meet them and ask,‘ Do you come in peace?’”

Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came and said,“ I see a company.” And Joram said,“ Take a horseman and send to meet them, and let him say,‘ Is it peace?’”

So Samuel did as the Lord instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him.“ What’s wrong?” they asked.“ Do you come in peace?”

He replied,“ As you know, the kingdom was rightfully mine; all Israel wanted me to be the next king. But the tables were turned, and the kingdom went to my brother instead; for that is the way the Lord wanted it.

Meanwhile, the Lord said to me,“ Put a watchman on the city wall. Let him shout out what he sees.He should look for chariots drawn by pairs of horses, and for riders on donkeys and camels. Let the watchman be fully alert.”Then the watchman called out,“ Day after day I have stood on the watchtower, my lord. Night after night I have remained at my post.Now at last— look! Here comes a man in a chariot with a pair of horses!” Then the watchman said,“ Babylon is fallen, fallen! All the idols of Babylon lie broken on the ground!”

“ Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say,‘ May God’s peace be on this house.’If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you.

“ Son of man, give your people this message:‘ When I bring an army against a country, the people of that land choose one of their own to be a watchman.When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he sounds the alarm to warn the people.Then if those who hear the alarm refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die.They heard the alarm but ignored it, so the responsibility is theirs. If they had listened to the warning, they could have saved their lives.But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.’“ Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me.If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths.But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself.

So the king sent out a second horseman. He rode up to them and said,“ The king wants to know if you come in peace.” Again Jehu answered,“ What do you know about peace? Fall in behind me!”

O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the Lord.

I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault,for I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.“ So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock— his church, purchased with his own blood— over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you— my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.

This message came to me concerning Edom: Someone from Edom keeps calling to me,“ Watchman, how much longer until morning? When will the night be over?”The watchman replies,“ Morning is coming, but night will soon return. If you wish to ask again, then come back and ask.”

While David was sitting between the inner and outer gates of the town, the watchman climbed to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As he looked, he saw a lone man running toward them.

David left his things with the keeper of supplies and hurried out to the ranks to greet his brothers.

So two chariots with horses were prepared, and the king sent scouts to see what had happened to the Aramean army.

For the leaders of my people— the Lord’s watchmen, his shepherds— are blind and ignorant. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

Meanwhile Absalom escaped. Then the watchman on the Jerusalem wall saw a great crowd coming down the hill on the road from the west. He ran to tell the king,“ I see a crowd of people coming from the Horonaim road along the side of the hill.”
