他隨從了他們的計謀，和以色列王亞哈的兒子約蘭一同到基列的拉末去，和亞蘭王哈薛交戰；亞蘭人擊傷了約蘭。於是約蘭回到耶斯列去，醫治他在拉末和亞蘭王交戰的時候所受的傷。猶大王約蘭的兒子亞哈謝，(“亞哈謝”：多數希伯來文抄本作“亞撒利雅”，可能是抄寫之誤或“亞哈謝”的另一種寫法；現根據各古譯本、十多份希伯來文抄本及王下8:29翻譯)，因亞哈的兒子約蘭病了，就下到耶斯列去看他。亞哈謝去見約蘭，就遇了害，這原是出於神；因為他去到以後，就和約蘭一同出去攻擊寧示的孫子耶戶。這耶戶就是耶和華所膏的，為要除滅亞哈家。耶戶討伐亞哈家的罪的時候，遇見了猶大的眾領袖和亞哈謝的兄弟的兒子，他們都是侍候亞哈謝的，耶戶把他們都殺了。

約蘭就說：“備車。”他們就為他備了車。以色列王約蘭和猶大王亞哈謝出城，他們各自乘坐戰車出去見耶戶，就在耶斯列人拿伯的田間遇上了他。約蘭看見耶戶的時候，就說：“耶戶，平安嗎？”耶戶說：“你的母親耶洗別的淫行和邪術這麼多，還有平安嗎？”約蘭立刻把車調轉過來逃跑，對亞哈謝說：“亞哈謝啊，反了！”耶戶拉滿弓，射中約蘭的背；箭從他的心窩穿出，他就倒在自己的車上。耶戶對副官畢甲說：“把他抬起來，丟在耶斯列人拿伯的田地裡，因為我還記得你我一起駕車跟隨他父親亞哈的時候，耶和華曾宣告了這些有關亞哈的話：‘昨天我實在看見了拿伯的血和他兒子們的血（這是耶和華的宣告）；我要在這塊田地上報應你（這是耶和華的宣告）。’現在你要按著耶和華的話，把他抬起來丟在田裡。”猶大王亞哈謝看見這一切，就沿著通往伯哈干的路逃走。耶戶緊追著他，說：“還有他！”他們就在靠近以伯蓮的姑珥坡把他擊傷在戰車上。他逃到米吉多，就死在那裡。

亞他利雅聽見衛兵和民眾的聲音，就進到耶和華的殿、眾民那裡去。她看見王子按著規例站在柱旁那裡，首領和號手在王的旁邊，當地所有的人民歡樂吹號。亞他利雅於是撕裂衣服，呼叫：“反了！反了！”耶何耶大祭司吩咐眾百夫長，就是統領軍兵的，對他們說：“把她從各班軍兵中趕出去，跟隨她的，都要用刀殺死。”因為祭司說：“不可在耶和華的殿內殺死她。”於是他們下手拿住她；她回到王宮的馬門的時候，就在那裡被人殺死。
