大衛的部下對他說：「耶和華曾對你說：『看哪，我要將你的仇敵交在你手中，你可以按你看為好的對待他。』看，今天就是了！」於是大衛起來，悄悄割下掃羅外袍的衣擺。隨後大衛因割下掃羅的衣擺而心中自責，就對部下說：「耶和華絕不允許我對耶和華的受膏者我主做這樣的事，我絕不對他下手，因為他是耶和華的受膏者。」大衛用這些話阻止了部下，不允許他們起來攻擊掃羅。掃羅起身離開洞穴，繼續行路。

正如古時的箴言所說：『惡事出於惡人』，我的手絕不敵對你。

耶西就派人去把他帶來；他面色紅潤，雙目清秀，樣貌英俊。耶和華說：「起來膏抹他，就是這個人！」於是撒母耳拿起裝膏油的犄角，在他兄弟們當中膏抹了他。從那天以後，耶和華的靈就大大臨到大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。

他在床上就圖謀作惡，定意行不善之道，不拒絕惡事。」

大衛對亞比篩說：「不要殺害他！有誰對耶和華的受膏者下手而能免受罪責呢？」大衛又說：「我指著耶和華的永生起誓：一定是耶和華來擊打他——或是到了所定的日子而死，或是出戰陣亡；耶和華絕不允許我對耶和華的受膏者下手。現在，去把他頭旁的長矛和水瓶拿過來，然後我們就走！」

禍哉！你這未遭毀滅的毀滅者，未遭背信之事的背信者！你行完了毀滅，自己必遭毀滅；你做盡了背信之事，自己必遭背信之事。
