She went and told the man of God, and he said,“ Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

For you yourselves know how you should imitate us: We were not idle among you;we did not eat anyone’s food free of charge; instead, we labored and toiled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you.It is not that we don’t have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us.In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you:“ If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.”For we hear that there are some among you who are idle. They are not busy but busybodies.Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and provide for themselves.

For you remember our labor and hardship, brothers and sisters. Working night and day so that we would not burden any of you, we preached God’s gospel to you.You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.

Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable— if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy— dwell on these things.

But the word of God came to Shemaiah, the man of God:

so that you may behave properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes.

The wicked person borrows and does not repay, but the righteous one is gracious and giving.
