Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him,“ The boy has not awakened.”

Gehazi went on ahead. He laid Elisha’s walking stick on the boy’s face. But there wasn’t any sound. The boy didn’t move at all. So Gehazi went back to Elisha. He told him,“ The boy hasn’t awakened.”

So Saul inquired of God:“ Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You hand them over to Israel?” But He did not answer him on that day.

Then they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it, and they called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,“ O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice and no one answered. And they limped about the altar which they had made.

For this reason it says,“ Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

And after entering, He* said to them,“ Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is asleep.”

And He answered them and* said,“ O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!”And they brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, the spirit immediately threw him into convulsions, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.And He asked his father,“ How long has this been happening to him?” And he said,“ From childhood.It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to kill him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!”But Jesus said to him,“ ‘ If You can?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said,“ I do believe; help my unbelief!”When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it,“ You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again!”And after crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said,“ He is dead!”But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him, and he got up.When He came into the house, His disciples began asking Him privately,“ Why is it that we could not cast it out?”And He said to them,“ This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.”

So Saul inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him, either in dreams, or by the Urim, or by the prophets.

But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying,“ I order you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches!”Now there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, doing this.But the evil spirit responded and said to them,“ I recognize Jesus, and I know of Paul, but who are you?”And the man in whom was the evil spirit, pounced on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.

“ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put in front of their faces the stumbling block of their wrongdoing. Should I let Myself be consulted by them at all?

And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.”And Jesus answered and said,“ You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was healed at once.Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said,“ Why could we not cast it out?”And He* said to them,“ Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,‘ Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

So a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens no longer exist, He will not awake nor be woken from his sleep.

When midday was past, they raved until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; but there was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention.
