One day the widow of a member of the group of prophets came to Elisha and cried out,“ My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”

Now a wife of one of the prophets appealed to Elisha for help, saying,“ Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the LORD. Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying,“ Your servant my husband is dead. You know that your servant feared Yahweh. Now the creditor has come to take for himself my two children to be slaves.”

The group of prophets from Bethel came to Elisha and asked him,“ Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”“ Of course I know,” Elisha answered.“ But be quiet about it.”

He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold— along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned— to pay the debt.

“ If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell himself to you, do not treat him as a slave.Treat him instead as a hired worker or as a temporary resident who lives with you, and he will serve you only until the Year of Jubilee.At that time he and his children will no longer be obligated to you, and they will return to their clans and go back to the land originally allotted to their ancestors.

They were saying,“ We have such large families. We need more food to survive.”Others said,“ We have mortgaged our fields, vineyards, and homes to get food during the famine.”And others said,“ We have had to borrow money on our fields and vineyards to pay our taxes.We belong to the same family as those who are wealthy, and our children are just like theirs. Yet we must sell our children into slavery just to get enough money to live. We have already sold some of our daughters, and we are helpless to do anything about it, for our fields and vineyards are already mortgaged to others.”

And from the throne came a voice that said,“ Praise our God, all his servants, all who fear him, from the least to the greatest.”

But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s children

Elisha now returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. One day as the group of prophets was seated before him, he said to his servant,“ Put a large pot on the fire, and make some stew for the rest of the group.”

“ We also promise that if the people of the land should bring any merchandise or grain to be sold on the Sabbath or on any other holy day, we will refuse to buy it. Every seventh year we will let our land rest, and we will cancel all debts owed to us.

There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

I told them that every Hebrew slave must be freed after serving six years. But your ancestors paid no attention to me.

Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed.

“ Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said.“ Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”

Then the group of prophets from Jericho came to Elisha and asked him,“ Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”“ Of course I know,” Elisha answered.“ But be quiet about it.”

For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
