Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

Then the king of Moab took his oldest son. He was the son who would become the next king of Moab. But the king offered his son as a sacrifice on the city wall. That shocked and terrified the men of Israel. So they pulled back and returned to their own land.

抑耶和華將以牡綿羊數千為悅、或以萬溪流油為悅、我當以初產之嬰孩、贖我愆尤、抑以親生之骨肉、贖我邪念乎。

蓋彼爇子女、以事其上帝、凡耶和華所惡之事、無不作為、爾之事爾上帝耶和華勿是則是效。

則當我凱旋之時、凡出我門以迓者、我必以彼燔而獻於耶和華。

我賜爾生子女、爾以子女獻而焚之、爾狥欲若此、豈為細故。

耶和華又曰、摩押犯罪、至三至四、更焚以東王之骸骨、有若煮灰、故我必罰其罪、

焚厥子女、以祭鬼神兮、流子女無辜之血、以祀迦南之偶像、污衊斯土兮、

掃羅曰、我儕夤夜追襲非利士人、虜其所有、使其民人、靡有孑遺、迨至黎明、乃止。民對曰、爾可任意以行。祭司曰、當詣上帝前。掃羅詢於上帝、非利士人今日可襲之乎。爾其以之付於以色列人手乎。是日上帝無所應。掃羅曰、惟爾民長、咸必前來、欲知今日誰干罪戾、我指救以色列族之耶和華而誓、雖我子約拿單、亦必死亡。民中無有應之者。乃申命於以色列族曰、汝眾在彼、我與我子約拿單在此。民曰、爾任意以行。掃羅祈以色列族之上帝耶和華、曰、願指示其實。掣籤得掃羅及約拿單。民弗與焉。掃羅曰、於我父子之間、試再掣籤、乃得約拿單。掃羅問約拿單曰、爾何所為、明以告我。約拿單曰、我僅以所執之杖、嘗蜜少許、何至於死。掃羅曰、約拿單、我必致爾於死、我不若是、願上帝罰我。民謂掃羅曰、今日蒙上帝所祐、約拿單大救以色列族、欲致之死、斷乎不可、我儕指耶和華以誓、其首之一髮、必不隕地、於是約拿單為民所援、免於死亡。掃羅不追非利士人、非利士人歸故土。

以色列王、憂憤交集、至撒馬利亞、而返宮闈。

曰、爾嫡所出、惟一以撒、爾所鍾愛者、可攜之往摩哩地、在我所示之山、燔之以獻。○

既盈二月、女乃旋歸、父循其所許之願、使不字而終、嗣後以色列族女子、每年必為基列人耶弗大女哀哭四日、遵為常例。

有先知覲以色列王亞哈曰、耶和華云、此實繁有徒者、爾見之乎、今日我必付於爾手、使爾知我乃耶和華。

亞伯拉罕舉目回顧、見有牡綿羊、角繫林叢、遂往執羊、燔而獻之、以代其子、

上帝之僕至、告以色列王曰、耶和華云、亞蘭人謂耶和華乃山嶽之上帝、非平原之上帝、故我必以此實繁有徒、付於爾手、使爾知我乃耶和華。
