Jehoiakim did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. He did just as the kings who had ruled before him had done.

And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.

He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.He took the image he had made and put it in God’s temple, of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon,“ In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever.I will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land I assigned to your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them concerning all the laws, decrees and regulations given through Moses.”But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. ( Now Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord; he prophesied the same things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did.When King Jehoiakim and all his officers and officials heard his words, the king was determined to put him to death. But Uriah heard of it and fled in fear to Egypt.King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan son of Akbor to Egypt, along with some other men.They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.) He learned to tear the prey and he became a man- eater.He broke down their strongholds and devastated their towns. The land and all who were in it were terrified by his roaring.Then the nations came against him, those from regions round about. They spread their net for him, and he was trapped in their pit.With hooks they pulled him into a cage and brought him to the king of Babylon. They put him in prison, so his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel. (niv)

Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire.The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord had hidden them. (niv)

In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the Lord.He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought,“ Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me.” But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.Ahaz gathered together the furnishings from the temple of God and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors of the Lord’s temple and set up altars at every street corner in Jerusalem.In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors. I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.’” (niv)
