And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his predecessors had done.

Jehoiakim did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. He did just as the kings who had ruled before him had done.

And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.

He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.He even set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son,“ In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;and I will not again remove the foot of Israel from the land which I have appointed for your fathers— only if they are careful to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.”So Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.And the Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they would not listen.

“ Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor’s service without wages And gives him nothing for his work,Who says,‘ I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.’“ Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him.He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.“ Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.”

Now there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath Jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid and fled, and went to Egypt.Then Jehoiakim the king sent men to Egypt: Elnathan the son of Achbor, and other men who went with him to Egypt.And they brought Urijah from Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.

But he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done; for Amon sacrificed to all the carved images which his father Manasseh had made, and served them.And he did not humble himself before the Lord, as his father Manasseh had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more.

‘ When she saw that she waited, that her hope was lost, She took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.He roved among the lions, And became a young lion; He learned to catch prey; He devoured men.He knew their desolate places, And laid waste their cities; The land with its fullness was desolated By the noise of his roaring.Then the nations set against him from the provinces on every side, And spread their net over him; He was trapped in their pit.They put him in a cage with chains, And brought him to the king of Babylon; They brought him in nets, That his voice should no longer be heard on the mountains of Israel.

And it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that the king cut it with the scribe’s knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words.Nevertheless Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah implored the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them.And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them.

Now in the time of his distress King Ahaz became increasingly unfaithful to the Lord. This is that King Ahaz.For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, saying,“ Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel.So Ahaz gathered the articles of the house of God, cut in pieces the articles of the house of God, shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and made for himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem.And in every single city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.

I will punish him, his family, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah all the doom that I have pronounced against them; but they did not heed.”’”
