That’s because the people have deserted me. They have burned incense to other gods. They have made me very angry because of the statues of gods their hands have made. So my anger will burn like a fire against this place. And the fire of my anger will not be put out.’ ” ’

Has a nation ever changed its gods?( Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the Lord.“ My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless:“ Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”

They say to wood,‘ You are my father,’ and to stone,‘ You gave me birth.’ They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say,‘ Come and save us!’Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns.

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the Lord and no longer served him,he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,

From that spot it cannot move. Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer; it cannot save them from their troubles.“ Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels.

in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.

All the nations will ask:“ Why has the Lord done this to this land? But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’”

From the rest he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships. He prays to it and says,“ Save me! You are my god!”They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand.No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say,“ Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say,“ Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”

Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.So people will be brought low and everyone humbled— do not forgive them.

“ But if you or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’People will answer,‘ Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them— that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.’”

Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord,“ We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”The Lord replied,“ When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.

I will destroy your idols and your sacred stones from among you; you will no longer bow down to the work of your hands.

He forsook the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and did not walk in obedience to him.

But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands.They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats.Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Savior.They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols.They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God— gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your ancestors did not fear.You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.The Lord saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters.

For a fire will be kindled by my wrath, one that burns down to the realm of the dead below. It will devour the earth and its harvests and set afire the foundations of the mountains.
