When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha,“ Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”“ Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

After they had gone across, Elijah said to Elisha,“ Tell me. What can I do for you before I’m taken away from you?”“ Please give me a double share of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha,“ Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said,“ Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”

When they had gone over, Elijah said to Elisha,“ Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said,“ Please let a double portion of your spirit be on me.”

He must recognize the rights of his oldest son, the son of the wife he does not love, by giving him a double portion. He is the first son of his father’s virility, and the rights of the firstborn belong to him.

I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone.

Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching.

And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Then he gave the seventy elders the same Spirit that was upon Moses. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But this never happened again.

Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him, doing just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son.

But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

O Lord God, please continue to keep your promise to David my father, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth!Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?”

“ And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the Kingdom will ever see me again.I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault,for I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.“ So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock— his church, purchased with his own blood— over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you— my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.“ And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.“ I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.You know that these hands of mine have worked to supply my own needs and even the needs of those who were with me.And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus:‘ It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”When he had finished speaking, he knelt and prayed with them.

“ O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes.Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.”

Come back to the place of safety, all you prisoners who still have hope! I promise this very day that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.

So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.

“ My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you.All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory.Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.“ Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy.

On that day the Lord will defend the people of Jerusalem; the weakest among them will be as mighty as King David! And the royal descendants will be like God, like the angel of the Lord who goes before them!

When Elisha was in his last illness, King Jehoash of Israel visited him and wept over him.“ My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!” he cried.Elisha told him,“ Get a bow and some arrows.” And the king did as he was told.Elisha told him,“ Put your hand on the bow,” and Elisha laid his own hands on the king’s hands.Then he commanded,“ Open that eastern window,” and he opened it. Then he said,“ Shoot!” So he shot an arrow. Elisha proclaimed,“ This is the Lord’s arrow, an arrow of victory over Aram, for you will completely conquer the Arameans at Aphek.”Then he said,“ Now pick up the other arrows and strike them against the ground.” So the king picked them up and struck the ground three times.But the man of God was angry with him.“ You should have struck the ground five or six times!” he exclaimed.“ Then you would have beaten Aram until it was entirely destroyed. Now you will be victorious only three times.”

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.And he said,“ Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem:‘ There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’You are witnesses of all these things.“ And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them.While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere— in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

“ O Lord, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the Lord will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”The Lord replied,“ Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim— one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord— to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”So Moses did as the Lord commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community.Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

“ I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
