Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered?

I’m sure you have heard about what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries. They have destroyed them completely. So do you think you will be saved?

Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?

You know perfectly well what the kings of Assyria have done wherever they have gone. They have completely destroyed everyone who stood in their way! Why should you be any different?

Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: They completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?

Behold, you yourself have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, destroying them completely. So will you be saved?

耶和華啊，亞述諸王確實掃滅列國，使其土地荒涼，把列國的神像丟在火中。因為那些神像只是人用木頭石頭製造的，根本不是神。

他說，『我的臣僕都要做藩王！迦勒挪豈不是和迦基米施一樣嗎？哈馬豈不是和亞珥拔一樣嗎？撒瑪利亞豈不是和大馬士革一樣嗎？它們不是都被我征服了嗎？這些國家都在我的手中，他們雕刻的偶像不勝過耶路撒冷和撒瑪利亞的偶像嗎？我怎樣毀滅撒瑪利亞和它的偶像，也必怎樣毀滅耶路撒冷和它的偶像。』」

難道你們不知道我和我的祖先怎樣對付列國嗎？列國的神明哪個能從我手中救自己的國家呢？我祖先所滅的列國中，有哪國的神明能從我手中救自己的國民呢？難道你們的上帝能從我手中救你們嗎？

亞述王攻打以色列全境，並圍困撒瑪利亞三年。何細亞執政第九年，撒瑪利亞淪陷。亞述王把以色列人擄到亞述，安置在哈臘、歌散的哈博河一帶以及瑪代人的各城。以色列人之所以有如此下場，是因為他們的上帝耶和華領他們出埃及，從埃及王法老手中救出他們，他們卻犯罪得罪祂。他們祭拜別的神明，效法耶和華在他們面前趕走的外族人的風俗和以色列諸王奉行的習俗。以色列人暗中做不義之事，冒犯他們的上帝耶和華。從瞭望塔到堅城，他們在各地建邱壇，在各高崗上、綠樹下立神柱和亞舍拉神像，在各邱壇燒香，如同耶和華在他們面前趕走的外族人一樣。他們邪惡的行為激怒了耶和華。
