Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew,“ Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!

Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall,“ Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria!

The royal spokesman stood and called out loudly in Hebrew:“ Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

Then Rabshakeh stood up and shouted with a loud voice in Judean, saying,“ Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!

Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear ye the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

Artaxerxes, king of kings, To Ezra the priest, a scribe of the Law of the God of heaven: Perfect peace, and so forth.

For he says,‘ Are not my princes altogether kings?Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria,As I have done to Samaria and her idols, Shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?’”Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has performed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say,“ I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”For he says:“ By the strength of my hand I have done it, And by my wisdom, for I am prudent; Also I have removed the boundaries of the people, And have robbed their treasuries; So I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.

Then the Rabshakeh said to them,“ Say now to Hezekiah,‘ Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria:“ What confidence is this in which you trust?

Indeed Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, With fine branches that shaded the forest, And of high stature; And its top was among the thick boughs.The waters made it grow; Underground waters gave it height, With their rivers running around the place where it was planted, And sent out rivulets to all the trees of the field.‘ Therefore its height was exalted above all the trees of the field; Its boughs were multiplied, And its branches became long because of the abundance of water, As it sent them out.All the birds of the heavens made their nests in its boughs; Under its branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young; And in its shadow all great nations made their home.‘ Thus it was beautiful in greatness and in the length of its branches, Because its roots reached to abundant waters.The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; The fir trees were not like its boughs, And the chestnut trees were not like its branches; No tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty.I made it beautiful with a multitude of branches, So that all the trees of Eden envied it, That were in the garden of God.’“ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:‘ Because you have increased in height, and it set its top among the thick boughs, and its heart was lifted up in its height,

Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and said,“ Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!Thus says the king:‘ Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you;nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying,“ The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria:‘ Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying,“ The Lord will deliver us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
