But Sennacherib’s chief of staff replied,“ Do you think my master sent this message only to you and your master? He wants all the people to hear it, for when we put this city under siege, they will suffer along with you. They will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat their own dung and drink their own urine.”

拉伯沙基说：“我主差遣我来，岂是单对你和你的主说这些话吗？不也是对这些坐在城上、要与你们一同吃自己粪、喝自己尿的人说吗？”

将军对他们说：“我主差遣我来，岂是单对你和你的主人说这些话吗？不也是对这些坐在城墙上、要与你们一同吃自己粪、喝自己尿的人说的吗？”

将军对他们说：“我主差遣我来，岂是单对你和你的主人说这些话吗？不也是对这些坐在城墙上、要与你们一同吃自己粪、喝自己尿的人说的吗？”

亚述的将军却说：“难道我主人派我来只对你们和你们的王说这些话吗？不也是对城墙上的人说吗？他们和你们一样都要吃自己的粪，喝自己的尿。”

拉伯沙基对他们说：“我主派我来，只是对你的主和你说这些话吗？不也是对坐在城墙上，和你们在一起吃自己的粪、喝自己的尿的人民说的吗？”

拉伯沙基說：「我主差遣我來，豈是單對你和你的主說這些話嗎？不也是對這些坐在城上、要與你們一同吃自己糞、喝自己尿的人說嗎？」

將軍對他們說：「我主差遣我來，豈是單對你和你的主人說這些話嗎？不也是對這些坐在城牆上、要與你們一同吃自己糞、喝自己尿的人說的嗎？」

將軍對他們說：「我主差遣我來，豈是單對你和你的主人說這些話嗎？不也是對這些坐在城牆上、要與你們一同吃自己糞、喝自己尿的人說的嗎？」

亞述的將軍卻說：「難道我主人派我來只對你們和你們的王說這些話嗎？不也是對城牆上的人說嗎？他們和你們一樣都要吃自己的糞，喝自己的尿。」

拉伯沙基對他們說：“我主派我來，只是對你的主和你說這些話嗎？不也是對坐在城牆上，和你們在一起吃自己的糞、喝自己的尿的人民說的嗎？”

參謀長對他們說：『我主上差遣我來說這些話，豈是單對你和你主上說的呢？不也是對這些坐在城上、要和你們一同喫自己糞喝自己尿的人說的麼？』

拉伯沙基曰、我主遣我、豈以此言僅告爾主及爾乎、非亦告坐於城上、將同爾食己矢、飲己溺之人乎、

臘沙基曰、我主遣我、不第與爾及爾主言也、亦使我與城垣之民言、使彼及爾自啖其遺溺。

拉伯沙基謂之曰、我主王遣我、豈使我以此言僅告爾主王與爾乎、非使我告坐於城上之民、將偕爾食己糞飲己溺者乎、

But the commander replied,“ Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall— who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”

But the commander replied,“ My master sent me to say these things. Are these words only for your master and you to hear? Aren’t they also for the people sitting on the wall? They are going to suffer just like you. They’ll have to eat their own waste. They’ll have to drink their own urine.”

But the Rabshakeh said to them,“ Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and to drink their own urine?”

But the royal spokesman said to them,“ Has my master sent me to speak these words only to your master and to you? Hasn’t he also sent me to the men who sit on the wall, destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”

But Rabshakeh said to them,“ Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not also sent me to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

But the Rabshakeh said to them,“ Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?”

But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?

But the Rabshakeh said to them,“ Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Hasn’t he also sent me to the men who sit on the wall, destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”

But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words?[ hath he] not[ sent me] to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

But the chief adviser said to them,“ My master did not send me to speak these words only to your master and to you. His message is also for the men who sit on the wall, for they will eat their own excrement and drink their own urine along with you.”

But Rabshakeh said to them,“ Has my master sent me to your master and to you, to speak these words? Hasn’t he sent me to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own urine with you?”

They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.

“ The siege and terrible distress of the enemy’s attack will be so severe that you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters, whom the Lord your God has given you.The most tenderhearted man among you will have no compassion for his own brother, his beloved wife, and his surviving children.He will refuse to share with them the flesh he is devouring— the flesh of one of his own children— because he has nothing else to eat during the siege and terrible distress that your enemy will inflict on all your towns.The most tender and delicate woman among you— so delicate she would not so much as touch the ground with her foot— will be selfish toward the husband she loves and toward her own son or daughter.She will hide from them the afterbirth and the new baby she has borne, so that she herself can secretly eat them. She will have nothing else to eat during the siege and terrible distress that your enemy will inflict on all your towns.

Then the Lord said,“ This is how Israel will eat defiled bread in the Gentile lands to which I will banish them!”

As a result, there was a great famine in the city. The siege lasted so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty pieces of silver, and a cup of dove’s dung sold for five pieces of silver.

“ All right,” the Lord said.“ You may bake your bread with cow dung instead of human dung.”

The people who once ate the richest foods now beg in the streets for anything they can get. Those who once wore the finest clothes now search the garbage dumps for food.
