Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.

They worshiped the Lord. But at the same time, they served the statues of their gods. And to this day their children and grandchildren continue to do what their people before them did.

We too will worship the LORD, because he is our God.”But Joshua told the people,“ You will not be able to worship the LORD, because he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions and sins.If you abandon the LORD and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you, harm you, and completely destroy you, after he has been good to you.”

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,they approached Zerubbabel and the family heads and said to them,“ Let us build with you, for we also worship your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time King Esar-haddon of Assyria brought us here.”But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of Israel’s families answered them,“ You may have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.”
