They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them,“ Do not do as they do.”

They refused to obey his rules. They broke the covenant he had made with them. They didn’t pay any attention to the rules he had warned them to keep. They worshiped worthless statues of gods. Then they themselves became worthless. They followed the example of the nations around them. They did it even though the Lord had ordered them not to. He had said,“ Do not do as they do.”

Thus says the Lord:“ What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?

The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?

for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, which they sinned and which they made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.

and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger,and they served idols, of which the Lord had said to them,“ You shall not do this.”

They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.

And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that“ an idol has no real existence,” and that“ there is no God but one.”

And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. For their rock is not as our Rock; our enemies are by themselves.

“ You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God: the heads of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, all the men of Israel,your little ones, your wives, and the sojourner who is in your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water,so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is making with you today,that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he promised you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.It is not with you alone that I am making this sworn covenant,but with whoever is standing here with us today before the Lord our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.

It is because you made offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”

“ Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.

Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced.

You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you.And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers

And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel.

They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood!
