那時，亞蘭王哈薛上來攻打迦特，攻取了，就定意上來攻打耶路撒冷。猶大王約阿施將他列祖猶大王約沙法、約蘭、亞哈謝所分別為聖的物和自己所分別為聖的物，並耶和華殿與王宮府庫裏所有的金子都送給亞蘭王哈薛；哈薛就不上耶路撒冷來了。

亞哈斯王打掉盆座四面鑲着的心子，把盆從座上挪下來，又將銅海從馱海的銅牛上搬下來，放在鋪石地；又因亞述王的緣故，將耶和華殿為安息日所蓋的廊子和王從外入殿的廊子挪移，圍繞耶和華的殿。

希西家就把耶和華殿裏和王宮府庫裏所有的銀子都給了他。那時，猶大王希西家將耶和華殿門上的金子和他自己包在柱上的金子都刮下來，給了亞述王。

亞述王提革拉‧毗列色上來，卻沒有幫助他，反倒欺凌他。亞哈斯從耶和華殿裏和王宮中，並首領家內所取的財寶給了亞述王，這也無濟於事。

於是亞撒從耶和華殿和王宮的府庫裏拿出金銀來，送與住大馬士革的亞蘭王便‧哈達，說：

因此，主必使大河翻騰的水猛然沖來，就是亞述王和他所有的威勢，必漫過一切的水道，漲過兩岸；必沖入猶大，漲溢氾濫，直到頸項。以馬內利啊，他展開翅膀，遍滿你的地。」

他掘了坑，又挖深了，竟掉在自己所挖的阱裏。他的毒害必臨到他自己的頭上；他的強暴必落到他自己的腦袋上。

耶和華必使亞述王攻擊你的日子臨到你和你的百姓，並你的父家，自從以法蓮離開猶大以來，未曾有這樣的日子。
