Then Pul king of Assyria invaded the land, and Menahem gave him a thousand talents of silver to gain his support and strengthen his own hold on the kingdom.

Then Tiglath- Pileser marched into the land of Israel. He was king of Assyria. Menahem gave him 38 tons of silver to get his help. He wanted to make his control over the kingdom stronger.

Then King Tiglath pileser of Assyria invaded the land. But Menahem paid him thirty seven tons of silver to gain his support in tightening his grip on royal power.

當國家在他手中穩定以後，他就把那些擊殺他父王的臣僕殺了。

他們背棄了他們列祖的神，隨從當地民族的神行邪淫；神曾從他們面前消滅了這些民族。因此，以色列的神激動了亞述王普勒的心，就是亞述王提革拉．毘尼色的心，他就把流本支派、迦得支派和瑪拿西半個支派的人擄到哈臘、哈博和哈拉，以及歌散河邊，他們的後裔直到今日還在那裡。

那時，猶大王希西家把耶和華殿門上和自己包在門柱上的金子，都刮了下來，給了亞述王。

耶和華這樣說：“倚靠世人，恃憑肉體為自己的力量，心裡偏離耶和華的，這人該受咒詛。

亞哈斯拿耶和華殿裡和王宮寶庫內找到的金子和銀子，送給亞述王作禮物。

他們上去投奔亞述，像一隻獨行的野驢，以法蓮賄買愛人。他們雖然在列國中賄買人，我現在卻要招聚他們。他們因著君王和領袖所加的重擔，逐漸衰微。

人要把它帶到亞述去，作貢物獻給那裡的大王。以法蓮必受羞辱，以色列必因自己的計謀蒙羞。

亞述王撒縵以色上來攻擊他，他就臣服於他，並且向他進貢。後來，亞述王發覺何細亞陰謀反叛：他曾派使者去見埃及王梭，並且不再向亞述王獻上貢物，像過去每年一樣。亞述王就拿住他，把他囚在牢裡。

但那受過困苦的，必不再見幽暗。以前神使西布倫和拿弗他利地被輕視，日後卻要使它們在沿海之路、約旦河外和外族人的加利利，得著榮耀。（本節在《馬索拉文本》為8:23）

猶大王約阿施於是拿出所有的聖物，就是他的祖先猶大王約沙法、約蘭和亞哈謝所獻的聖物，以及他自己所獻的聖物，還有耶和華殿和王宮寶庫裡所有的金子，送給亞蘭王哈薛，哈薛就離開耶路撒冷去了。

以法蓮看見自己的疾病，猶大家看見自己的創傷，以法蓮就往亞述去，派人去見亞述的大王。可是他卻不能醫治你們，也不能醫好你們的創傷。
