猶大王亞瑪謝與群臣謀、遣使見耶戶孫約哈斯子以色列王約阿施、曰、爾來、我二人可決一戰、以色列王約阿施遣使見猶大王亞瑪謝曰、利巴嫩之荊棘、遣使謂利巴嫩之柏香木曰、爾以爾女予我子為妻、後利巴嫩之野獸過焉、荊棘為其所蹂躪、爾曰、已擊以東人、遂中心驕傲、以此矜誇、以此矜誇或作欲以得榮爾安居於宮猶可、何為自取其禍、致己與猶大國偕亡乎、亞瑪謝不聽、此乃出天主之意、因彼曾拜以東神、天主欲以之付於敵手、故以色列王約阿施至猶大之伯示麥、與猶大王亞瑪謝戰、猶大人敗於以色列人前、各遁其家、家原文作幕以色列王約阿施在伯示麥、擒約哈斯約哈斯即亞哈謝孫約阿施子猶大王亞瑪謝、攜至耶路撒冷、毀耶路撒冷城垣、自以法蓮門至城隅之門、共四百尺、將天主殿中俄別以東所守之金銀、與一切器皿、及王宮之寶物、悉取之、又取人為質、而返撒瑪利亞、○

亞瑪謝不聽、故以色列王約阿施至猶大之伯示麥、與猶大王亞瑪謝戰、

押尼珥謂約押曰、不如使者起、戲於我前、約押曰、可、掃羅子伊施波設之臣僕、即屬便雅憫支派十二人、遂起而前、大衛之臣僕十二人亦然、各執敵首、以刀互刺其脇、彼此殞亡、故名其處曰希利甲哈素林、譯即刀田之義即在基遍、是日因以大戰、押尼珥與以色列人為大衛臣僕所敗、

勿急出與人爭、恐終受人辱、而爾無所能為、

多籌畫、所謀乃成、欲交戰、先設良策、

人恃驕泰、常啟爭端、聽勸言者、則為有智、

爭端之起、如水之破隙、故爭競未發之先、當止之、

愚者之言啟爭端、其口招撲責、
