Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge:“ Come, let us face each other in battle.”

After the battle, Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the king of Israel. Jehoash was the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. Amaziah said,“ Come on. Let us face each other in battle.”

One day Amaziah sent messengers with this challenge to Israel’s king Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu:“ Come and meet me in battle!”

Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, and challenged him:“ Come, let’s meet face to face.”

Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying,“ Come, let us face one another in battle.”

Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying,“ Come, let us meet face to face.”

Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle.Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.So Joash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth- shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent.And Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth- shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed- edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

But Amaziah would not hear. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth- shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish- bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath- hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.And the battle was very sore that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.

By pride cometh only contention; But with the well- advised is wisdom.

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calleth for stripes.
