在那些日子，耶和华开始削弱以色列，哈薛在以色列各处的边境攻击他们：

以色列人数点人数，预备了粮食，就去迎战亚兰人。以色列人对着他们安营，好像两小群山羊羔；亚兰人却满布了那地。

那时，以色列全地找不到一个铁匠，因为非利士人说：“恐怕希伯来人制造刀剑或枪矛。”以色列众人要磨锄头、犁头、斧头和铲子，就各自下到非利士人那里去磨。磨锄头或犁头的价钱是七克银子，磨三齿叉、斧头或刺棒的价钱是四克银子。所以，到了争战的时候，跟随扫罗和约拿单的众民，没有一个手里有刀或枪的，只有扫罗和他的儿子约拿单有刀枪。有一队非利士人的驻军出到密抹的隘口去。

以色列人看见自己情况危急，处境窘迫，众人就藏在山洞、岩穴、地洞里和地坑之中。有些希伯来人渡过了约旦河，逃到迦得和基列地。但是扫罗仍然留在吉甲，跟随他的众人都恐惧战兢。

于是亚哈数点了跟从各省省长的年轻人，共有二百三十二人。以后，他又数点所有的人民，以色列众民共有七千人。

无数的人群齐集在判决谷，因为耶和华的日子临近了判决谷。

于是撒母耳动身，从吉甲上便雅悯的基比亚去；扫罗数点跟随他的人，约有六百人。

看哪！我要使你成为打粮的器具，又新，又锋利，又有很多利齿；你要扬净群山，把它们压得粉碎，又使冈陵变成糠秕。你必簸扬它们，风要把它们吹去，旋风也要把它们吹散；但你要靠耶和华喜乐，以以色列的圣者夸耀。

谁从东方激动了一个人，凭公义把他召到自己的脚前来？他把列国交在他面前，他制伏众王；他使他们在他的刀下化作灰尘，他使他们在他的弓下像碎秸一样被吹散。

哈薛说：“我主为什么哭起来了？”他回答：“因为我已知道你要对以色列人施行的恶事。他们的城堡，你要放火焚烧；他们的年轻人，你要用刀杀死；他们的婴孩，你要摔死；他们的孕妇，你要剖开。”

现在你可以与我的主人亚述王打赌：我给你二千匹马，看你这一方面能否派出足够骑马的人来。

我捣碎他们，像风前的尘土，我倾倒他们，像街上的烂泥。
