Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time.

耶和華說：「大馬士革人三番四次地犯罪，我必不收回對他們的懲罰，因為他們用打糧食的鐵器蹂躪基列。

那時，耶和華開始削減以色列的領土。哈薛攻打以色列各處，

以色列人也召集軍隊，準備糧草，迎戰敵軍。他們在亞蘭人對面安營，像兩小群山羊，而敵軍卻滿山遍野。

那時，以色列全境找不到一個鐵匠，這是因為非利士人的禁令，以免希伯來人製造刀槍。以色列人都要到非利士的鐵匠那裡去磨鋤、犁、斧和鏟。磨鋤或犁要花八克銀子，磨三齒叉、斧頭或趕畜棒要花四克銀子。所以在交戰的日子，除了掃羅和約拿單外，其他以色列人手上都沒有刀槍。當時非利士的一隊防兵前往密抹的隘口駐守。

以色列人看見敵軍壓境，情勢危急，紛紛躲進山洞、叢林、石穴、地洞和坑裡。有些希伯來人過了約旦河，逃到迦得和基列。但掃羅仍然留在吉甲，跟隨他的人都害怕得發抖。

於是，亞哈召集了省長屬下的青年軍二百三十二人，又召集以色列全軍，共七千人。

千千萬萬的人聚集在審判谷，因為耶和華的日子要臨到那裡。

撒母耳離開吉甲去便雅憫境內的基比亞。掃羅數了一下跟隨他的人，約有六百人。

看啊，我要使你成為一具簇新、帶許多利齒的打穀器。你要打爛高山，使丘陵碎如糠秕。你要簸它們，讓風吹散它們，讓狂風捲走它們。但你要以耶和華為喜樂，以以色列的聖者為榮耀。

「誰使一人從東方興起？誰憑公義把他召到跟前？誰把列國交給他，使他征服列國的君王，用刀將他們化為塵土，用弓將他們淪為風吹的碎稭？

哈薛問：「我主為什麼哭呢？」以利沙說：「因為我知道你會加害以色列人。你會放火燒他們的堡壘，用刀殺戮他們的壯丁，摔死他們的孩童，剖開他們的孕婦。」

來，跟我主人亞述王打個賭，你若能找到兩千騎士，我就給你兩千匹馬！

我把他們打得粉碎，如同風中的灰塵；我把他們倒掉，如同街上的泥土。
