My dear brothers and sisters, listen to me. Hasn’t God chosen those who are poor in the world’s eyes to be rich in faith? Hasn’t he chosen them to receive the kingdom? Hasn’t he promised it to those who love him?

You have shown yourselves to be worthy by what you have given. So other people will praise God because you obey him. That proves that you really believe the good news about Christ. They will also praise God because you share freely with them and with everyone else.

They sold property and other things they owned. They gave to anyone who needed something.Every day they met together in the temple courtyard. They ate meals together in their homes. Their hearts were glad and sincere.

‘ I know that you suffer and are poor. But you are rich! Some people say they are Jews but are not. I know that their words are evil. Their worship comes from Satan.

Is it encouraging others? Then encourage them. Is it giving to others? Then give freely. Is it being a leader? Then work hard at it. Is it showing mercy? Then do it cheerfully.

Foolish people won’t be considered noble anymore. Those who are worthless won’t be highly respected.Foolish people say foolish things. Their minds are set on doing evil things. They don’t do what is right. They tell lies about the Lord. They don’t give hungry people any food. They don’t let thirsty people have any water.Those who are worthless use sinful methods. They make evil plans against poor people. They destroy them with their lies. They do it even when those people are right.But those who are noble make noble plans. And by doing noble things they succeed.

As Jesus looked up, he saw rich people putting their gifts into the temple offering boxes.He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.“ What I’m about to tell you is true,” Jesus said.“ That poor widow has put in more than all the others.All these other people gave a lot because they are rich. But even though she is poor, she put in everything. She had nothing left to live on.”

Here is what we take pride in. Our sense of what is right and wrong tells us how we have acted. We have lived with honor and godly honesty. We have depended on God’s grace and not on the world’s wisdom. We lived that way most of all when we were dealing with you.

We and the Lord were your examples. You followed us. You welcomed our message even when you were suffering terribly. You welcomed it with the joy the Holy Spirit gives.

You will be made rich in every way. Then you can always give freely. We will take your many gifts to the people who need them. And they will give thanks to God.

We are sad, but we are always full of joy. We are poor, but we make many people rich. We have nothing, but we own everything.

We sent him so that no one would be upset by times of testing. You know very well that we have to go through times of testing.In fact, when we were with you, here is what we kept telling you. We were telling you that our enemies would make us suffer. As you know very well, it has turned out that way.

Brothers and sisters, you became like the members of God’s churches in Judea. They are believers in Christ Jesus, just as you are. Your own people made you suffer. You went through the same things the church members in Judea suffered from the Jews.

But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins. They were worth only a few pennies.Jesus asked his disciples to come to him. He said,“ What I’m about to tell you is true. That poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others.They all gave a lot because they are rich. But she gave even though she is poor. She put in everything she had. That was all she had to live on.”
