I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while.

While they were eating, he said,“ I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.”Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn,“ Am I the one, Lord?”

At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.

Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening— it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

O Lord, you misled me, and I allowed myself to be misled. You are stronger than I am, and you overpowered me. Now I am mocked every day; everyone laughs at me.When I speak, the words burst out.“ Violence and destruction!” I shout. So these messages from the Lord have made me a household joke.But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!

For if I cause you grief, who will make me glad? Certainly not someone I have grieved.That is why I wrote to you as I did, so that when I do come, I won’t be grieved by the very ones who ought to give me the greatest joy. Surely you all know that my joy comes from your being joyful.I wrote that letter in great anguish, with a troubled heart and many tears. I didn’t want to grieve you, but I wanted to let you know how much love I have for you.I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me.Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough.Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement.So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him.I wrote to you as I did to test you and see if you would fully comply with my instructions.When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit,so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.

I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.

A third time he asked him,“ Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said,“ Then feed my sheep.

Then Moses went back to the Lord and protested,“ Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me?Ever since I came to Pharaoh as your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done nothing to rescue them!”

Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love.

Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.
