Even if my letter made you sad, I’m not sorry I sent it. At first I was sorry. I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while.

I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while.

And while they were eating, he said,“ Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other,“ Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him:“ Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me.Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long.But if I say,“ I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent— not to put it too severely.The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven— if there was anything to forgive— I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.

The third time he said to him,“ Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time,“ Do you love me?” He said,“ Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said,“ Feed my sheep.

Moses returned to the Lord and said,“ Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.

See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
