Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

But God, who encourages the downhearted, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.

Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life?For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness.Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.

LORD, you coerced me into being a prophet, and I allowed you to do it. You overcame my resistance and prevailed over me. Now I have become a constant laughingstock. Everyone ridicules me.For whenever I prophesy, I must cry out,“ Violence and destruction are coming!” This message from the LORD has made me an object of continual insults and derision.Sometimes I think,“ I will make no mention of his message. I will not speak as his messenger any more.” But then his message becomes like a fire locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul. I grow weary of trying to hold it in; I cannot contain it.

For if I make you sad, who would be left to make me glad but the one I caused to be sad?And I wrote this very thing to you, so that when I came I would not have sadness from those who ought to make me rejoice, since I am confident in you all that my joy would be yours.For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not to make you sad, but to let you know the love that I have especially for you.But if anyone has caused sadness, he has not saddened me alone, but to some extent( not to exaggerate) he has saddened all of you as well.This punishment on such an individual by the majority is enough for him,so that now instead you should rather forgive and comfort him. This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair.Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.For this reason also I wrote you: to test you to see if you are obedient in everything.If you forgive anyone for anything, I also forgive him– for indeed what I have forgiven( if I have forgiven anything) I did so for you in the presence of Christ,so that we may not be exploited by Satan( for we are not ignorant of his schemes).

All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent!

Instead your hearts are filled with sadness because I have said these things to you.

Jesus said a third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time,“ Do you love me?” and said,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus replied,“ Feed my sheep.

Moses returned to the LORD, and said,“ Lord, why have you caused trouble for this people? Why did you ever send me?From the time I went to speak to Pharaoh in your name, he has caused trouble for this people, and you have certainly not rescued them!”

Though he causes us grief, he then has compassion on us according to the abundance of his loyal kindness.

For see what this very thing, this sadness as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what punishment! In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
