While they were eating, he said,“ Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him,“ Surely not I, Lord?”

Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”And he went outside and wept bitterly.

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the arrival of Titus,

Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness.No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

You deceived me, LORD, and I was deceived. You seized me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all the time; everyone ridicules me.For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim,“ Violence and destruction!” so the word of the LORD has become my constant disgrace and derision.I say,“ I won’t mention him or speak any longer in his name.” But his message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones. I become tired of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.

For if I cause you pain, then who will cheer me other than the one being hurt by me?I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart— not to cause you pain, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.If anyone has caused pain, he has caused pain not so much to me but to some degree— not to exaggerate— to all of you.This punishment by the majority is sufficient for that person.As a result, you should instead forgive and comfort him. Otherwise, he may be overwhelmed by excessive grief.Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.I wrote for this purpose: to test your character to see if you are obedient in everything.Anyone you forgive, I do too. For what I have forgiven— if I have forgiven anything— it is for your benefit in the presence of Christ,so that we may not be taken advantage of by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his schemes.

As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be zealous and repent.

Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

He asked him the third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved that he asked him the third time,“ Do you love me?” He said,“ Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”“ Feed my sheep,” Jesus said.

So Moses went back to the LORD and asked,“ Lord, why have you caused trouble for this people? And why did you ever send me?Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name he has caused trouble for this people, and you haven’t rescued your people at all.”

Even if he causes suffering, he will show compassion according to the abundance of his faithful love.

For consider how much diligence this very thing— this grieving as God wills— has produced in you: what a desire to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what deep longing, what zeal, what justice! In every way you showed yourselves to be pure in this matter.
