When we came to Macedonia, we weren’t able to rest. We were attacked no matter where we went. We had battles on the outside and fears on the inside.

For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn— fighting without and fear within.

I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

You said,‘ Woe to me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.’

Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.

I face death every day— yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The peoples will be burned to ashes; like cut thornbushes they will be set ablaze.”

For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.

Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.
