嗚呼、格林多人乎、吾人之口、為爾等而暢開矣；心花亦為爾等而怒放矣。吾之愛爾、不為不厚；奈何爾之胸襟、不能自寬乃爾耶？

因是予仰體基督耶穌之慈心、切慕爾眾、有如飢渴；耿耿此心、主實鑒之。吾所為心禱者無他、惟望爾之仁愛與日俱進、發為真知卓見、

吾在與爾相暌之時、書此種切、庶幾與爾相晤時、無庸秉持主所授我之大權、以懲惡徒、而盡吾之職責、則幸甚矣！蓋此大權所以輔人成德、非所以致人傾毀也。

夫吾之所以寓書於爾等者、固非為彼作惡者之故、亦非為被害者之故、惟欲在天主明鑒之下、測驗爾等對於吾儕之誠意云耳。

然吾亦胡為而出此乎？謂我不爾愛乎？主實鑒之！

爾等本身、即為吾儕之薦書、銘諸吾儕之心、而為萬人所閱讀者也。

吾作前書時、淚眼洗面、心中不知有多少憂慮苦悶、非欲使爾等憂戚、乃欲使爾等知我之如何赤忱相愛耳。倘有為憂戚之造因者、彼豈徒貽吾一人憂、且多少亦貽爾等憂；蓋吾言『多少』者不欲責之太過耳。

予之書此、非欲愧爾、乃欲規爾。予視爾如愛兒、有所見不忍不告也。爾在同道中儘有千萬之導師、第愛爾以父母之愛者、恐亦不可多得耳。夫以福音之道使爾等因基督而得神生者、非我也耶？

吾為爾等靈魂之故、固不惜任何之犧牲、即犧牲本身、亦所甘心。豈吾之愛爾愈厚、而爾之愛我愈薄耶？

不惟授爾以天主福音、即為爾犧牲性命、亦所甘心；蓋情之所鍾、有不能自已者焉。
