Godly sadness causes us to turn away from our sins and be saved. And we are certainly not sorry about that! But worldly sadness brings death.

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?

Is it not your ways that are unjust?“ Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.

All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.
