What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:“ I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

How can the temple of the true God and the statues of other gods agree? We are the temple of the living God. God has said,“ I will live with them. I will walk among them. I will be their God. And they will be my people.”( Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 32:38; Ezekiel 37:27)

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying,“ Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.

But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people.

And I will make a covenant of peace with them, an everlasting covenant. I will give them their land and increase their numbers, and I will put my Temple among them forever.I will make my home among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

so they will obey my decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.

“ But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord.“ I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

The Lord says,“ Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you.Many nations will join themselves to the Lord on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you, and you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me to you.

Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly.

At that time I will plant a crop of Israelites and raise them for myself. I will show love to those I called‘ Not loved.’ And to those I called‘ Not my people,’ I will say,‘ Now you are my people.’ And they will reply,‘ You are our God!’”

All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,

I will bring them home again to live safely in Jerusalem. They will be my people, and I will be faithful and just toward them as their God.

I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say,‘ These are my people,’ and they will say,‘ The Lord is our God.’”

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.

“ And you will live in Israel, the land I gave your ancestors long ago. You will be my people, and I will be your God.

“ I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you.And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.

But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.

And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.

And,“ Then, at the place where they were told,‘ You are not my people,’ there they will be called‘ children of the living God.’”

No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

Now let them stop worshiping other gods and honoring the relics of their kings, and I will live among them forever.

The Lord said to me,“ Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place where I will rest my feet. I will live here forever among the people of Israel. They and their kings will not defile my holy name any longer by their adulterous worship of other gods or by honoring the relics of their kings who have died.

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.( And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)

“ So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone.But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”The people replied,“ We would never abandon the Lord and serve other gods.For the Lord our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us.It was the Lord who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the Lord, for he alone is our God.”Then Joshua warned the people,“ You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.If you abandon the Lord and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”But the people answered Joshua,“ No, we will serve the Lord!”“ You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said.“ You have chosen to serve the Lord.”“ Yes,” they replied,“ we are witnesses to what we have said.”“ All right then,” Joshua said,“ destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”The people said to Joshua,“ We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him alone.”

You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.

“ Pay close attention to all my instructions. You must not call on the name of any other gods. Do not even speak their names.

Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.

“ No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!

So be careful not to break the covenant the Lord your God has made with you. Do not make idols of any shape or form, for the Lord your God has forbidden this.The Lord your God is a devouring fire; he is a jealous God.

Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel,“ If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”So the Israelites got rid of their images of Baal and Ashtoreth and worshiped only the Lord.

“ You must not have any other god but me.

“ Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols.

“ You must not worship any of the gods of neighboring nations,for the Lord your God, who lives among you, is a jealous God. His anger will flare up against you, and he will wipe you from the face of the earth.

“ O Israel, stay away from idols! I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you. I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me.”

Then Elijah stood in front of them and said,“ How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.

He built pagan altars in the Temple of the Lord, the place where the Lord had said,“ My name will remain in Jerusalem forever.”He built these altars for all the powers of the heavens in both courtyards of the Lord’s Temple.

He did away with the idolatrous priests, who had been appointed by the previous kings of Judah, for they had offered sacrifices at the pagan shrines throughout Judah and even in the vicinity of Jerusalem. They had also offered sacrifices to Baal, and to the sun, the moon, the constellations, and to all the powers of the heavens.The king removed the Asherah pole from the Lord’s Temple and took it outside Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley, where he burned it. Then he ground the ashes of the pole to dust and threw the dust over the graves of the people.He also tore down the living quarters of the male and female shrine prostitutes that were inside the Temple of the Lord, where the women wove coverings for the Asherah pole.

And though they worshiped the Lord, they continued to follow their own gods according to the religious customs of the nations from which they came.And this is still going on today. They continue to follow their former practices instead of truly worshiping the Lord and obeying the decrees, regulations, instructions, and commands he gave the descendants of Jacob, whose name he changed to Israel.

For they go up to their roofs and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the Lord, but then they worship Molech, too.
