Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

We know what it means to have respect for the Lord. So we try to help other people to understand it. What we are is plain to God. I hope it is also plain to your way of thinking.

Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.

Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your consciences.

save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

saying,“ This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law.”

And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

For I was in terror of calamity from God, and I could not have faced his majesty.

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand—just as you did partially understand us— that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.

He said to him,‘ If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive,but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed— God is witness.Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.For you know how, like a father with his children,we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner.

For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

And when they came to him, he said to them:“ You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews;how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house,testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there,except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me.But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all,for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks.

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

For the arrows of the Almighty are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.

Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me.

Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?

Terrors frighten him on every side, and chase him at his heels.

How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors!

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless:“ Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”

For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?For what can a man give in return for his soul?For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?
