昔特書此、恐我來時所當使我樂者、反令我憂、蓋我深信爾眾以我樂為樂也、

昔我以書達爾、恐來時所當使我樂者、轉令我憂耳、蓋我樂即爾樂、吾知之素矣、

蓋我深知爾眾以我之樂為己之樂、

此點吾在前書中亦曾提及、以免吾來之時、應使我歡欣鼓舞者、反貽我以憂戚耳。且吾固深信爾等莫不以吾之樂為樂也。

I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

What I wrote to you I wrote for a special reason. When I came, I didn’t want to be troubled by those who should make me glad. I was sure that all of you would share my joy.

And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all.

That is why I wrote to you as I did, so that when I do come, I won’t be grieved by the very ones who ought to give me the greatest joy. Surely you all know that my joy comes from your being joyful.

I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.

This is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy was the joy of you all.

We have sent with them our brother, whom we have many times proved earnest in many things, but now much more earnest, by reason of the great confidence which he has in you.

Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even beyond what I say.

that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness, sexual immorality, and lustfulness which they committed.This is the third time I am coming to you.“ At the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”I have said beforehand, and I do say beforehand, as when I was present the second time, so now, being absent, I write to those who have sinned before now, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare;

For though I grieved you with my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I see that my letter made you grieve, though just for a while.

In this confidence, I was determined to come first to you, that you might have a second benefit,

We have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you both do and will do the things we command.

What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles, that one has his father’s wife.You are arrogant, and didn’t mourn instead, that he who had done this deed might be removed from among you.For I most certainly, as being absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as though I were present, judged him who has done this thing.In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,are to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump?Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place.Therefore let’s keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.I wrote to you in my letter to have no company with sexual sinners;yet not at all meaning with the sexual sinners of this world, or with the covetous and extortionists, or with idolaters; for then you would have to leave the world.But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortionist. Don’t even eat with such a person.For what do I have to do with also judging those who are outside? Don’t you judge those who are within?But those who are outside, God judges.“ Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.”

So although I wrote to you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be revealed in you in the sight of God.

Nevertheless, he who comforts the lowly, God, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing.
