Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,

as it is written,“ I have made you the father of many nations”— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told,“ So shall your offspring be.”He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead( since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb.No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.That is why his faith was“ counted to him as righteousness.”But the words“ it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone,but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord,who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me.But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us.

He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.But he said to me,“ My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.

Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die.

Thus says the Lord:“ Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.

Thus says the Lord:“ Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.“ Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.

The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.And he said to me,“ Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered,“ O Lord God, you know.”Then he said to me,“ Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone.And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them.Then he said to me,“ Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.Then he said to me,“ Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say,‘ Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel.And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people.And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written,“ I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak,knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
